Southampton eyeing 26-year-old forward as relegation threat looms ‎

Southampton are already drawing up potential transfer plans for the summer as they continue their late push for automatic promotion from the Championship.

According to reports from Fussball Transfers, the Saints are monitoring FC Heidenheim attacker Christian Conteh. The 26-year-old has emerged as a possible option with the German side currently battling relegation from the Bundesliga.

Southampton have forced their way back into the promotion picture thanks to an impressive run of form in 2026, having not tasted defeat since January 17. With the race for a top-two finish going right down to the wire, focus remains firmly on results on the pitch.

At the same time, those behind the scenes are preparing for multiple outcomes, mapping out recruitment strategies for both Premier League promotion and another season in the Championship.

Conteh is one of the names now under consideration. Heidenheim only signed him in January, but a quick departure could be on the cards if they are relegated. That situation could open the door for Southampton to make a move.

More on rumoured Southampton target Christian Conteh

Conteh’s switch to Heidenheim earlier this year came in a deal worth around €1.5 million (just over £1.3 million). Prior to that, he developed through the ranks at FC St. Pauli, making a handful of senior appearances before earning a move to Feyenoord in 2020.

However, he struggled to establish himself in the Netherlands and returned to Germany via loan spells, eventually joining VfL Osnabruck permanently. His performances there  four goals and two assists in 31 games  earned him a move to Eintracht Braunschweig, where he contributed five goals and five assists across 35 appearances.

Since arriving at Heidenheim, Conteh has yet to score in six outings. His role has varied, featuring both on the wings and through the middle, which has limited his consistency.

Southampton revisit Heidenheim market after previous success

Southampton supporters may find this link particularly interesting given the club’s recent success recruiting from Heidenheim. Leo Scienza, who arrived last summer, has been a standout performer and is widely considered one of the best signings in the Championship this season.

If Conteh were able to replicate anything close to that impact, he would represent a valuable addition at St Mary’s. Still, questions remain over how serious Southampton’s interest is likely to become.

Should promotion to the Premier League be secured, the club may instead prioritise players with a stronger track record of goals and assists, as Conteh’s output so far has been relatively modest.
