“I’ve Heard” – Expert reveals major twist in West Brom case affecting Leicester and Portsmouth
Kieran Maguire has suggested there may be a potential miscalculation in the EFL’s charge against West Bromwich Albion, a development that could significantly influence the Championship relegation battle.
The situation threatens to worsen an already difficult campaign for West Brom, who have been charged with breaching the EFL’s Profitability and Sustainability regulations with just four matches remaining.
Any points deduction at this stage would deal a serious blow to their survival hopes, mirroring the impact such penalties had on Leicester City earlier in the season.

Currently, the Baggies sit only two points above the relegation zone and are keen to avoid any immediate sanction, having publicly maintained that they are compliant with the financial rules. The club has stated it is cooperating fully with the EFL while focusing on results on the pitch during the run-in.
Reports indicate that West Brom exceeded permitted losses by roughly £16 million, posting around £55 million in losses over a three-year period. Attempts have reportedly been made to push any punishment into next season, though those efforts may not succeed.
However, speaking to BBC Sport, Maguire introduced a fresh angle, suggesting the possibility of an administrative error behind the charge. He indicated that the issue may stem from incorrect calculations rather than deliberate overspending, describing it as more likely a mistake than any coordinated attempt to breach regulations.
If such an error is confirmed, it could remove the threat of a points deduction entirely—an outcome that would have major implications for fellow relegation rivals such as Portsmouth, Oxford United, and Leicester City.
With the case still unresolved, the coming weeks are set to be crucial. West Brom’s Championship status remains uncertain, and the broader relegation picture could shift dramatically depending on the final outcome of the investigation.
