West Brom linked with 4-4-2 manager as Shilen Patel faces defining call
Amid ongoing uncertainty and off-field issues, West Bromwich Albion have at least shown resilience on the pitch as they battle to stay in the Championship following a difficult 2025/26 campaign.
The Baggies have built a reputation in recent years for bouncing between the Premier League and the second tier, but this season is set to end with their lowest finish since 2000.
It has largely been a frustrating year at The Hawthorns. Early optimism under Ryan Mason faded quickly, leading to his dismissal in January. His successor, Eric Ramsay, then endured a disastrous spell, statistically the worst of any Albion manager.
Club legend and former midfielder James Morrison has since stepped in as interim boss. After a slow start, the ex-Scotland international has overseen a significant turnaround in recent weeks.

West Brom are currently on an eight-match unbeaten run, which began with a 1-1 draw away at Sheffield United on March 7. During this improved spell, they have also picked up six points from four games against Southampton, Hull City, Wrexham and Millwall—teams who could all have Premier League ambitions.
However, the threat of a possible points deduction still hangs over the club. A 2-0 victory at Preston North End last time out did at least move them five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of a crucial set of fixtures.
Attention has now turned to Morrison’s future, with reports suggesting the club’s hierarchy, led by Shilen Patel, are weighing up whether to offer him the job permanently if survival is secured.
According to Football League World, Morrison has emerged as a leading candidate after losing just once since taking charge against Oxford United in late February.
Given his long-standing connection with the club, having made over 300 appearances and remained involved behind the scenes, many believe he has earned serious consideration.
West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess feels Morrison should at least make the final shortlist, praising the job he has done in revitalising a struggling squad.
He highlighted the improvement in both performances and confidence, noting how players like Diakite and Campbell have flourished under Morrison after previously struggling for impact.
Burgess also suggested that sticking with Morrison’s 4-4-2 system and approach next season when expectations may be lower could allow the team to continue progressing.
While it remains unclear who else is under consideration, and how financial concerns may influence the decision, Morrison has undeniably restored belief within the squad.
The key question will be whether he can sustain this form over a full campaign and shape the squad effectively despite ongoing uncertainty.
For now, though, the signs are encouraging, and many supporters are likely to share the view that he deserves a genuine opportunity to take the role on a permanent basis.
