“Unfair and frustrating” – West Brom fans respond to major points deduction setback
West Bromwich Albion’s hopes of staying in the Championship are under serious threat, with a potential points deduction looming that could ultimately seal their fate.
The Baggies sit just two points above the relegation zone with only four matches left to play, having recently drawn 0-0 with promotion-chasing Millwall. While James Morrison’s side are unbeaten in seven games, they have only managed to win twice during that run, leaving little margin for error as they prepare to face Preston North End at Deepdale this weekend.
However, concerns off the pitch may prove even more decisive than results on it. According to BBC reporter Dale Johnson, West Brom could face a deduction of two or three points after allegedly breaching the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules tied to their 2024/25 accounts.

With relegation rivals already punishedLeicester City losing six points and Sheffield Wednesday hit with a much heavier penalty during administration—the threat is very real.
Supporters are growing increasingly anxious about the situation. Fan pundit Callum Burgess admitted the overriding emotion is frustration, particularly given the team’s improvement under Morrison.
He reflected that earlier in the season, when results were poor, relegation would have felt deserved. Now, however, the idea that survival could be decided by financial rulings rather than performances on the pitch is a bitter pill to swallow.
Burgess also pointed to the wider financial imbalance in football, questioning why smaller clubs face strict consequences while top-flight sides continue to spend heavily.
Even if the breach is minimal, he fears the punishment could have a huge impact, calling it “very disappointing” if it ultimately determines Albion’s fate.
It would be a cruel end to a campaign that began with play-off ambitions. Under Ryan Mason, results failed to meet expectations, leading to his dismissal in January despite the club still holding a seven-point cushion above the drop zone. His successor, Eric Ramsay, endured a disastrous spell, failing to win any of his nine matches and dragging the team deeper into trouble.
Morrison has since brought stability and resilience, but the looming threat of a points deduction could undo that progress. If it does result in relegation, it would underline just how difficult and chaotic this season has been for West Brom and leave a lingering sense that their fate was decided away from the pitch.
