Leicester on relegation brink as Portsmouth claim huge victory
Leicester City manager Gary Rowett admitted his team fell short in key areas after slipping to a damaging 1-0 loss at Fratton Park, a result that leaves them on the verge of dropping into League One.
The decisive moment came in the second half when Portsmouth substitute Ibane Bowat forced the ball over the line from a corner, compounding the Foxes’ struggles. Now, just a decade after their remarkable Premier League triumph, Leicester require a dramatic turnaround to avoid relegation.
Their fate could be sealed as soon as Tuesday, and Rowett acknowledged the familiar frustrations. He pointed to recurring issues, suggesting his side once again failed to deliver in crucial moments despite coping reasonably well with Portsmouth’s physical approach for large spells.

While questions have been raised about the team’s determination throughout the season, Rowett focused more on shortcomings in quality, composure and resilience particularly in the passage of play that led to conceding from a set-piece. He insisted belief remains within the squad, but stressed it must quickly translate into both performances and results.
The match itself offered little quality, with Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s tight-angle effort just before half-time standing out as the only shot on target in a drab opening period. Portsmouth threatened more after the break, with Millenic Alli and Adrian Segecic both going close before the breakthrough arrived on 63 minutes, Bowat scrambling home at the back post from Segecic’s delivery.
The defeat leaves Leicester staring at the possibility of third-tier football next season, while Portsmouth’s position looks far more secure following a third consecutive win without conceding.
Pompey boss John Mousinho described the result as a significant step toward survival, noting the growing gap between the sides. Although he conceded the match lacked quality and flow, he felt his team did enough to earn the points in what was a scrappy and disrupted contest.
He highlighted how the nature of the game particularly early interruptions prevented any real rhythm, with the decisive goal reflecting the untidy overall performance. Nonetheless, Mousinho emphasised the importance of building momentum at this stage of the campaign, especially with a challenging run of fixtures ahead, and underlined that results like this could ultimately define their season.
