Coventry take the lead over Sunderland and Fulham in race for stunning record-breaking signing

Coventry City are preparing to make a major statement ahead of their Premier League return, with plans to shatter their transfer record in a bold move for Stoke City winger Sorba Thomas this summer.

Coventry leading the charge for Sorba Thomas deal

This summer represents a defining moment for Coventry. After achieving promotion against the odds, their focus now shifts to doing what many newly-promoted sides struggle with staying in the Premier League.

The Sky Blues face a crucial choice in approach. They could follow a sustainable model similar to Sunderland’s recent strategy, or risk adopting a path closer to Burnley’s, which has often ended in relegation.

With Frank Lampard at the helm, Coventry will be hoping their pulling power can help attract exciting and perhaps unexpected signings. Early transfer links suggest ambition, with goalkeeper Carl Rushworth among those tipped for a permanent switch.

Defensive reinforcements are also being explored, including Union Saint-Gilloise centre-back Kevin Mac Allister, who brings European experience and pedigree as the brother of Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister.

Reports indicate Coventry are ready to spend significantly, potentially eclipsing their long-standing transfer record of around £8m, set when Craig Bellamy joined the club in 2000.

According to Sports Boom, Coventry are currently frontrunners to sign Thomas, though the deal could cost as much as €25m (£22m). Interest from Fulham and Sunderland remains, but Coventry appear to be pushing hardest for the winger’s signature.

Why Coventry should think twice

Thomas has undoubtedly impressed this season for Stoke, registering 10 goals and 13 assists in the Championship. However, committing £22m to a player without Premier League experience would represent a significant gamble.

For a newly-promoted side, recruitment decisions are critical. Spending such a large sum on a winger coming off a standout and possibly unrepeatable season raises concerns about long-term value and consistency.

Category Total
Appearances 175
Goals 17
Assists 42

A closer look at his record highlights a potential red flag 10 of his 17 Championship goals have come this season alone. That spike in output could point to an outlier campaign rather than sustained elite performance.

While the move would signal serious intent from Coventry, it’s one that carries clear risk. The club will need to strike the right balance between ambition and smart recruitment if they are to secure their Premier League status.
