‎Championship-winning manager emerges as West Brom’s top target in fresh talks

West Bromwich Albion have reportedly opened discussions over bringing back former boss Tony Mowbray on a short-term deal until the end of the campaign, according to Football Insider.

The Baggies are already hunting for their third manager of the 2025/26 season after parting ways with Eric Ramsay in February. Ramsay had replaced Ryan Mason, but neither appointment has delivered the desired turnaround, leaving Albion hovering just one point above the Championship relegation zone.

Still without a league win in 2026, the urgency around their next appointment is growing by the week. What began as a season with ambitions of at least mounting a play-off challenge has quickly turned into a battle for survival as the run-in approaches.

West Brom Step Up Manager Search

As per Football Insider, Albion have now held talks with Mowbray and are accelerating their efforts to install a new figure in the dugout. The club are believed to be weighing up a temporary reunion with Mowbray, potentially alongside his long-time assistant Mark Venus, until the summer.

Such a move would allow the club to stabilise results in the short term while conducting a more thorough search for a permanent head coach ahead of next season. Mowbray, who previously guided West Brom to Championship success during his first spell at The Hawthorns, is among several names under consideration, though no agreement is guaranteed at this stage.

Another former Albion manager, Carlos Corberán, has also been linked with the vacancy as speculation continues.

Supporters Turn Frustration on Players

With no permanent manager in place, tensions are rising among supporters. Following defeat away at Oxford United, fans directed their anger towards the squad after losing to a fellow relegation-threatened side sitting two places below them in the table.

The atmosphere around the club has grown increasingly toxic, and whoever takes charge next will inherit a daunting challenge in attempting to steady performances and lift morale during a crucial stage of the season.

Tony Mowbray’s Managerial Record

Mowbray’s managerial history spans several clubs:

Ipswich Town (caretaker): 1 win in 4 games (~25%)

Hibernian: ~48.15% win rate across 108 matches

West Bromwich Albion (2006–09): ~40.71% from 140 games

Celtic: ~51.11% in 45 matches

Middlesbrough: ~39.87% over 153 fixtures

Coventry City: ~34.67% in 75 matches

Blackburn Rovers: ~52.17% from 69 games

Sunderland: ~41.94% (based on latest available figures)
