“Best player on the pitch”: Reporter praises Blackburn Rovers man after Sheffield United triumph
Blackburn Rovers secured their Championship safety in emphatic fashion with a 3-1 victory away at Sheffield United on Wednesday night.
Ryoya Morishita was the standout performer in the opening half, earning high praise from Lancashire Telegraph reporter Elliott Jackson. The Japanese attacker played a key role in Rovers’ attacking display at Bramall Lane, where he got on the scoresheet, while Yuki Ohashi added a brace to seal the win.
Since arriving at Ewood Park last summer, Morishita has settled quickly into English football. The 29-year-old has featured 36 times in the league this season, contributing four goals and nine assists in a productive debut campaign.

Jackson was particularly impressed with his first-half display, awarding him a rare perfect rating and noting his influence on Blackburn’s attacking play throughout that period.
The result leaves Blackburn sitting 19th in the table with one game remaining, as they prepare to host already-relegated Leicester City in their final fixture of the season.
Morishita’s arrival last August added quality and creativity to Blackburn’s forward line, and the Japan international who has three senior caps has grown into an important figure within the squad. He signed a three-year deal running until June 2028.
Under Michael O’Neill, Morishita has been given the freedom to express himself, and his recent performances suggest he is thriving in that role. His movement and attacking intent caused Sheffield United significant problems and underline his growing confidence.
Before moving to England, Morishita played for Legia Warsaw in Poland, where he scored 14 goals in 78 appearances in the Ekstraklasa.
Blackburn’s decision to replace Valérien Ismaël with O’Neill has proven effective, with the club now assured of Championship football next season. With safety confirmed, they can approach their final match with Leicester without pressure.
Looking ahead, Morishita will be aiming to build on a strong first season and continue his development. Meanwhile, Blackburn face an important decision regarding O’Neill’s future, with his contract nearing its end.
Securing his services could provide stability ahead of the summer, when the club may look to strengthen the squad while also considering potential departures.
