Pittsburgh Pirates Connected to Ex-New York Yankees Player in Free Agency.
The Pittsburgh Pirates, aiming to stay competitive in the 2024 season, have reportedly expressed interest in free agent catcher Gary Sanchez. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Pirates, along with other teams, are considering the former Yankees catcher, who had a successful stint with the Padres in 2023. Despite Sanchez’s lower batting averages in recent years, he remains a potent power hitter, hitting 19 home runs in the previous season.
The 31-year-old veteran has played for various teams, including the Yankees, Twins, Mets, and Padres. The Pirates, determined to contend, have made offseason moves like adding Marco Gonzales and Martin Perez to bolster their pitching staff. With injured player Oneil Cruz set to return, Pittsburgh aims to fulfill its goal of remaining competitive throughout the upcoming season, having Jason Delay, Endy Rodriguez, and Ali Sanchez as catchers on the current roster.
