Tyler Heinema joining the Boston Red Sox may not become a notorious New York Mets trade. The catcher, acquired off waivers and later DFA’d for roster adjustments, was traded to the Red Sox for cash considerations during his DFA period.

This marks the second trade between the Mets and the Red Sox this offseason. In a previous deal, the Mets exchanged Rule 5 Draft pick Justin Slaten for minor leaguer Ryan Ammons. The collaboration between Mets’ David Stearns and Red Sox’s Craig Breslow is proving to be shrewd.

Stearns and Breslow, formerly rivals in the Brewers-Cubs division, are now forging deals in different leagues. The Heineman trade echoes a previous deal with Boston, akin to Stearns’ approach with Cooper Hummel sent to the Giants for cash considerations.

Under new owner Steve Cohen, initially cautious in flexing financial strength, the Mets are now playing the long game. While seemingly minor, these trades lay the groundwork for future collaborations, reflecting Stearns’ strategic approach in building relationships within the league.
