Three-Time All-Pro Receives $72 Million in Blockbuster Trade with New Orleans Saints

One of the game’s best, but with a price tag to match
It appears like the New Orleans Saints are planning for 2025 as if they want to be a playoff team. The Saints spent every dime they could find to add free agents this offseason, despite playing with a rookie quarterback and finishing with just five wins last season. Among them were three-year contracts for defensive end Chase Young and safety Justin Reid.
It’s unclear why the Saints feel the need to overextend themselves, considering their terrible salary cap situation.
Perhaps they believe that if they can secure eight victories, they can secure the NFC South division title. Might as well put everything on the line if that’s the truth. On Monday, Saints Wire’s Luke Loffredo suggested a risky move the Saints may make to bolster their roster: trade for three-time All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins.
“Ramsey has been very forthright about his admiration for Staley, describing him as ‘the best defensive coordinator’ he has ever played under. “Adding some fuel to the speculation,” Loffredo said, “the fact that Ramsey even responded on social media with a supportive ‘My guy’ after Staley was announced as the Saints’ new DC.”
As a seven-time Pro Bowler, Ramsey’s talent is beyond dispute.
However, the Saints would be bound to him until 2028 due to the three-year, $72 million extension he signed with Miami. If they wanted to cut connections with him sooner, they would have to eat a piece of dead money, which is $18 million after 2025.
At cornerback, the Saints have a bunch of young players that are promising but mostly unknown.
A trade for Jalen Ramsey would help New Orleans regain its suffocating defensive reputation and stabilize the position. You can’t turn a blind eye to this action because of the familiarity and obvious need at that place.
In the end, the Saints would be a little irresponsible to commit to Ramsey for any length of time if they aren’t going to contend for the playoffs this season. But given the Saints’ self-perception, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility.
