O’Neill fires up Rovers with aim to disrupt Coventry’s promotion charge
Michael O’Neill is no stranger to being cast as the underdog and is embracing that role again as Blackburn Rovers look to delay Coventry City’s promotion celebrations.
Coventry need just a single point at Ewood Park to seal their return to the Premier League following a superb season under Frank Lampard. However, Rovers have their own urgent priorities, with the team still fighting to create distance from the relegation zone and secure their Championship survival.
O’Neill has urged his players to relish the challenge of upsetting the occasion, pointing out that if they are not part of the celebration, they should aim to disrupt it. He expects a strong travelling support from Coventry, much like previous visits from West Brom, Preston and Middlesbrough, but believes his side have coped well in those high-pressure fixtures, remaining unbeaten in each.

Despite those positives, he acknowledged Blackburn’s struggles at home this season and stressed the need to improve, particularly with only two home matches left, including this clash against the league leaders. Still, he insists that unpredictability defines the Championship and that any team can be beaten on their day.
O’Neill emphasised the importance of staying competitive deep into games, especially against top opposition, noting that doing so can increase pressure on sides chasing promotion. His focus is on making life difficult for Coventry while ensuring Blackburn deliver a strong performance of their own.
Drawing on his experience with Northern Ireland, O’Neill highlighted the need for organisation and resilience, especially given injuries to key players. He admitted that much of his managerial career has involved setting teams up to counter opponents with greater quality, ensuring they remain hard to break down while still posing a threat.
He added that external factors, such as the game being televised, are irrelevant to his priorities. Instead, his main concern is building a team that is tough to beat and capable of competing effectively.
O’Neill also praised Lampard’s impact at Coventry, noting their rise from 17th when he took charge in November 2024 to their current position at the top of the table. While he expects Coventry to eventually secure promotion, he is determined to ensure it does not happen at Blackburn’s expense.
With this match marking Rovers’ second-to-last home fixture, O’Neill called on supporters to play their part. He acknowledged that home form has been disappointing but pointed to the dedication of fans, including those who travelled in large numbers for a midweek game at Southampton.
He stressed that strong backing from the stands could make a crucial difference in the remaining fixtures, as the club faces a defining period in its fight for Championship survival. O’Neill made it clear that nobody associated with Blackburn wants the prospect of relegation to League One.
Finally, he reassured supporters that the players’ commitment has been outstanding since his arrival, with the squad working tirelessly in training and matches. His hope is that their efforts will translate into the points needed to secure safety and provide a positive finish to the season.
