Kalvin Phillips’ actions after Man City departure speaks volume as Chris Wilder breaks silence

Kalvin Phillips had been tipped for a possible return to Leeds United, but instead completed a deadline-day loan move from Manchester City to Championship outfit Sheffield United.

Blades boss Chris Wilder has been full of praise for the former Leeds midfielder following his arrival at Bramall Lane.

Phillips, who joined City in 2022, has struggled for regular minutes under Pep Guardiola and has since spent time on loan at West Ham, Ipswich Town and now Sheffield United.

His sole appearance for City this season came as a late substitute during their Carabao Cup victory over Huddersfield in September, sparking fresh speculation over his future ahead of the January window.

A comeback to Elland Road was widely discussed, with reports suggesting City were open to permanent bids in the region of £10m for the 30-year-old. However, another temporary switch ultimately came to fruition.

Speaking after sealing the move, Wilder described it as a positive few days for the club and offered his early assessment of Phillips, stressing that the midfielder is prepared for the challenge ahead.

Wilder said it had been a strong period bringing Phillips, Joe Rothwell and Leo Hjelde into the squad, adding that Phillips requires no special treatment given his career pedigree.

The Sheffield United manager confirmed the midfielder is in good physical condition, explaining that he simply needs match rhythm and game time to rediscover his best form. Wilder also highlighted Phillips’ attitude, noting that he has already made a strong impression despite only being with the squad for a short time.

Phillips and fellow new arrivals Hjelde and Rothwell were presented to supporters during Tuesday’s 3-1 home win over Oxford City.

His experience is expected to play a key role as the Blades push for a play-off place, with the club currently eight points adrift of sixth-placed Wrexham. Phillips could make his Sheffield United debut in Monday’s home clash against promotion-chasing Middlesbrough.
