Ipswich Town join Coventry in pursuit of 30-goal phenomenon hailed as “similar to Kane”
For Ipswich Town, their return to the Premier League still feels fresh. Coventry City, meanwhile, are finally back among English football’s elite after a 25-year exile from the top flight.
Back in 2001, Coventry supporters unfurled banners promising they would return. Few could have imagined the wait would stretch across an entire generation before that dream became reality.
Now, after the celebrations fade at both Portman Road and the CBS Arena, attention will quickly turn towards recruitment and survival planning.

One priority stands above the rest — signing a striker capable of delivering the goals needed to stay in the Premier League. Recent history has shown how important that can be. Leeds United strengthened with Dominic Calvert-Lewin last summer, while Sunderland secured Brian Brobbey, and both forwards played huge roles in helping their clubs remain in the division.
Frank Lampard and Kieran McKenna will surely have taken note.
Coventry City and Ipswich need a ruthless finisher
Ipswich relied heavily on Liam Delap last season, and his performances were so impressive they earned him a lucrative transfer to Chelsea. Although the Tractor Boys ultimately fell short of survival, replacing his goals will now become a major task for McKenna.
Coventry, meanwhile, may be searching for their next iconic talisman in the mould of Dion Dublin.
One player linked with both clubs is Swansea City striker Zan Vipotnik, who claimed the Championship Golden Boot after an outstanding campaign. With reports valuing him at around £15 million, he could represent excellent value in today’s market.
Another intriguing option is Troy Parrott. Coventry were reportedly keen on the Republic of Ireland international towards the end of last year, with the striker currently thriving at AZ Alkmaar.
Should Lampard remain interested, it would hardly be surprising if Ipswich also entered the race. After all, before departing Tottenham Hotspur permanently, Parrott previously spent time on loan at Portman Road.
That spell did not go particularly well, with the forward scoring only twice in 18 appearances, but he has since transformed into a far more complete player. His valuation has now reportedly climbed to around £24 million.
Why Troy Parrott could be the perfect signing
Premier League survival often demands ruthless decision-making. Sunderland and Leeds both demonstrated that by aggressively upgrading key positions after promotion.
Sunderland quickly moved on from several members of their Championship-winning side, with Wilson Isidor eventually losing his place to Brobbey. Leeds also replaced Joel Piroe — despite his prolific second-tier form — by bringing in Calvert-Lewin.
Coventry, especially, may need to follow a similar path. Haji Wright enjoyed an excellent season under Lampard, scoring 17 league goals and finishing among the Championship’s leading scorers.
Ipswich spread goals more evenly across the squad, with Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene combining for 38 strikes, while George Hirst added 11 of his own.
The permanent signing of Chuba Akpom has already been confirmed, but after scoring just twice in 29 league games, questions remain over whether he can make the required impact in the top flight.
That is why Parrott feels like such an attractive option.
The former Spurs forward has exploded into form since leaving North London behind. One respected football analyst on social media even described him as “similar to Harry Kane” due to his movement, finishing instincts and intelligence inside the box.
After scoring 20 goals in 47 matches last season, Parrott has elevated his game again this year, producing an astonishing 30 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions, including ten in the Conference League.
He is aggressive, direct and clinical in front of goal — exactly the type of centre-forward newly promoted sides often require.
For Coventry, he could become their next Viktor Gyokeres-style success story. For Ipswich, he may represent the ideal replacement for Delap.
Either way, Parrott increasingly looks destined for Premier League football next season.
