‎Coventry City preparing to part ways with four players this summer

Coventry City have stormed back into the Premier League, ending a 25-year absence in dominant fashion by clinching the Championship title, and attention has already turned toward a pivotal summer transfer window.

Top-flight football is set to return to the CBS Arena in the coming months after Coventry secured promotion under Frank Lampard, who has overseen a remarkable revival. With that success achieved, focus now shifts to strengthening the squad, as the club prepares for an active summer of recruitment to ensure they are ready for the demands of Premier League football.

At the same time, not every member of the current squad will make that step up. A number of departures are expected, with several players nearing the end of their deals or loan spells.

Four players, in particular, look set to move on this summer, whether through expiring contracts or the conclusion of temporary agreements.

Carl Rushworth

Carl Rushworth’s loan spell from Brighton & Hove Albion is approaching its conclusion, though there remains a strong possibility his association with Coventry is not over just yet.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper arrived to fill in for the injured Oliver Dovin and quickly established himself as one of the most influential players in the squad. Having previously gained Championship experience with Swansea City and Hull City, he adapted seamlessly and exceeded expectations.

Rushworth’s performances have been exceptional throughout the campaign, with his shot-stopping statistics placing him among the very best in the division. His impact was recognised at the end of the season, where he collected multiple club awards, including both player-voted and fan-voted honours.

While his loan technically expires this summer, there have been strong indications that a permanent return could be on the cards. For now, he is due to head back to Brighton, but a swift reunion cannot be ruled out.

Romain Esse

Romain Esse joined Coventry on loan from Crystal Palace in January, adding depth to Lampard’s attacking options on the flanks.

The young winger arrived with promise, having been signed by Palace for a significant fee not long ago, but he has yet to fully establish himself at senior level. During his time with Coventry, he showed flashes of ability but struggled to make a consistent impact.

With limited goal contributions across his appearances, his departure at the end of the loan spell is unlikely to leave a major gap in the squad. He is expected to return to Crystal Palace, where he will continue his development.

Yang Min-Hyeok

Yang Min-Hyeok also arrived in January, initially joining Coventry after a spell on loan at Portsmouth from Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the season.

Despite showing encouraging signs during his time at Fratton Park, his move to Coventry did not result in increased opportunities. Game time proved hard to come by, and he featured only briefly during the second half of the campaign.

As a result, the young South Korean winger is set to return to Tottenham this summer, where he will look to progress further and build on his early experiences in English football.

Jamie Allen

Jamie Allen’s long association with Coventry City appears to be coming to an end, with his contract set to expire this summer.

Having joined the club in 2019, Allen has been a dependable presence across multiple campaigns, contributing to the team’s rise through the divisions. Although not always a regular starter, his commitment and versatility made him a valued squad member.

This season saw him reach a personal milestone of 200 appearances for the club, underlining his importance during a transformative period in Coventry’s history.

Now, as the club prepares for life in the Premier League, it looks increasingly likely that Allen will move on. He departs having played a meaningful role in one of the most significant chapters in the club’s recent past.
