‎Sheffield Wednesday captain Bannan breaks silence on Josh Windass’ Wrexham post

Josh Windass delivered a heartfelt message after Wrexham narrowly missed out on a Championship play-off place on the final day of the season.

Wrexham AFC were held to a 2-2 draw by Middlesbrough FC on Saturday, a result that proved costly as victories elsewhere saw them slip out of the top six. Hull City’s 2-1 win over Norwich City ultimately pushed the Red Dragons down to seventh.

Boro initially took the lead through Tommy Conway, but Wrexham responded impressively as Josh Windass and Sam Smith turned the game around. However, David Strelec struck before the break to level things up, ensuring Wrexham’s promotion hopes were left hanging by a thread that ultimately snapped.

After the match, Windass took to Instagram to express his frustration, admitting it was one of the toughest moments of his career while still praising his teammates for their efforts across the campaign.

His former Sheffield Wednesday teammate Barry Bannan was quick to show support, encouraging him to stay positive and praising both his season and character.

The pair had only recently shared a dressing room before Windass made the move to Wrexham, a switch influenced in part by financial instability at Wednesday under Dejphon Chansiri. Bannan later departed himself, joining Millwall FC in January.

Despite the disappointment, Windass has enjoyed an impressive individual season, contributing 16 goals and five assists in 41 league appearances. Still, Wrexham’s failure to secure a play-off spot means their remarkable rise from non-league football will pause short of a third consecutive promotion push.

Elsewhere, Bannan played a key role in Millwall’s win over Oxford United, though their efforts left them just short of automatic promotion. They now turn their attention to the play-offs, where they face Hull City with a place in the Premier League on the line.

While Wrexham’s immediate disappointment is clear, the setback may offer a valuable opportunity. Another season in the Championship could allow the club to strengthen further before attempting to take the next step toward the Premier League under the ambitious ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
