Patrick Bamford opens up on Sheffield United struggles and delivers honest verdict on Chris Wilder bond
Patrick Bamford has admitted frustration over Sheffield United’s underwhelming season, acknowledging it is difficult not to be involved in a promotion push.
The 32-year-old striker made a surprise switch to Bramall Lane in November, initially signing a short-term deal after a period without a club. He had previously been deemed surplus to requirements by Leeds United, bringing an end to a seven-year spell following his move from Middlesbrough.

Since arriving in South Yorkshire, Bamford has rediscovered form, scoring 10 goals in 25 appearances. However, his contributions have not been enough to lift the Blades into promotion contention, with the side sitting 17th in the EFL Championship with four matches remaining.
Reflecting on the campaign, Bamford described the situation as disappointing, pointing to a lack of consistency in recent months as a key factor behind the team’s struggles. He added that manager Chris Wilder remains focused on instilling a winning mentality that can benefit the squad next season.
Despite initial doubts over their relationship stemming from past incidents when Bamford mocked Wilder during a promotion celebration—the pair have since built a strong understanding. Bamford revealed he contacted Wilder to apologise shortly after joining, and the matter was quickly resolved.
He went on to praise Wilder’s management style, highlighting his honesty and direct communication. According to Bamford, the Blades boss is clear in his expectations, quick to recognise good performances, and equally willing to point out when standards are not met.
