West Brom facing potential points deduction as fans get worried

West Bromwich Albion could be dealt a significant setback as the 2025–26 Championship season approaches its closing stages, with the possibility of a points deduction hanging over the club.

The Baggies have endured a difficult campaign, with their initial appointment of Ryan Mason failing to deliver the expected results. The subsequent mid-season decision to bring in Minnesota United manager Eric Ramsay proved even more unsuccessful.

As a result, former midfielder James Morrison has been tasked with guiding the team through the remainder of the season at a critical time, with only a narrow gap separating them from the relegation zone and little margin for error.

Since returning in an interim capacity, Morrison has steadied the side to some extent, losing just once his first match back, away to Oxford United. The team has since gone seven games unbeaten, although that run includes only two victories, limiting their ability to pull clear of danger.

However, off-field issues may now compound their problems. Reports indicate that the club has been charged by the English Football League for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules linked to their 2024–25 financial accounts. Under EFL regulations, such a violation typically results in a points deduction applied in the following season, which in this case would be the current campaign.

Financial disclosures show that the club recorded a £17 million loss last season, adding to substantial deficits in previous years. Over a three-year period, total losses have reached approximately £59.3 million well above the permitted £39 million threshold, even though certain expenditures may be exempt from the calculation.

While club officials are reportedly attempting to postpone any sanction until the 2026–27 season, the situation remains uncertain. The club has a limited window to appeal the charge, and any decision could come after the conclusion of the regular season.

Even a modest points deduction at this stage could have serious implications, given how tightly contested the relegation battle is. It may also influence the fate of other clubs in the lower part of the table, including Leicester City, who are themselves fighting to avoid another relegation.
