Derby County close in on £9m set-piece maestro after opening discussions
Derby County have moved into a strong position in the race to recruit a new midfielder this summer, having already initiated contact over a potential deal.
The Rams are preparing to resume their campaign following the international break with a crucial Good Friday clash away to Coventry City, who currently sit at the top of the Championship table.
It represents a significant test, but Derby will approach the fixture with confidence after an impressive run of form that has seen them win four of their last five matches. That surge has lifted them to within three points of sixth-placed Southampton, who have also been performing strongly under Tonda Eckert.

Manager John Eustace was particularly encouraged by his side’s latest outing, a narrow 1-0 win over Birmingham City, which he described as a commanding display from the outset.
While their divisional status for next season remains uncertain amid the ongoing play-off push, Derby are already progressing with summer recruitment plans. Their focus has turned to strengthening in central midfield, and an initial approach has now been made.
Reports indicate that Derby are currently leading the pursuit of Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, whose contract runs until the end of 2026. However, interest is also emerging from fellow Championship clubs Watford and Norwich City, setting up potential competition.
The MLS outfit are believed to value the 24-year-old between €5 million and €10 million (£4 million–£9 million). Derby have signalled serious intent by making contact through intermediaries as they look to advance discussions.
Berhalter, who was born in London, primarily operates as a defensive midfielder but has demonstrated attacking output early in the MLS season, registering two goals and two assists in his first five appearances.
The United States international, capped 11 times, has also received praise for his delivery from set-pieces, with reports suggesting he ranks just behind Lionel Messi in that aspect within the league.
In addition to his technical quality, Berhalter has impressed defensively, averaging 4.7 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per 90 minutes this season figures that place him among the top performers in the Vancouver squad. His all-round profile makes him a potentially valuable addition to Eustace’s midfield options.
