John Konchar & Two other Grizzlies players that must be sold during the 2025 offseason
When the NBA offseason rolls around, it will be unlike anything the league has ever experienced, says Shams Charania of ESPN. The Memphis Grizzlies are bracing themselves to get swept up in the mayhem if general manager Zach Kleiman’s prediction that the team had a “disappointing” season comes to fruition.
The Grizzlies have the ability to go star hunting, even if it means trading one of their key players, and they have some salary cap room to sign a player to a mid-level exception. They still have some young players on the roster who other teams could be interested in.
1. Brandon Clarke
Since the Grizzlies drafted him in the first round of the 2019 draft, the top reserve big man has been an essential part of the squad. His effectiveness has been hindered by injuries, as he has been sidelined since March of 2023 and again this year, preventing him from participating in the Grizzlies’ postseason runs.
Additionally, he just had his worst professional season, during which he set a new mark for fewest rebounds ever and scored fewer than ten points a game.
His lowest minute distribution of his career is likely a contributing factor as well. Additionally, Clarke possesses the sole team-wide contract that falls into the middle of the pack, with an average annual salary of $12.5 million, which may be incorporated into any agreement.
A team that relies on their star point guard for scoring would consider him replaceable due to his lack of three-point shooting ability.
2. Santi Aldama
Santi Aldama, on the other hand, is coming off a great year in which he led the Grizzlies in scoring for the bench (12.5 ppg) and is competing with Clarke.
He set new personal bests in rebounding (6.4 per game) and shooting percentage (100 for the season). Nevertheless, the Grizzlies were plagued by his unreliability as a low post and perimeter defender towards the conclusion of the season.
In their first play-in game and first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Golden State Warriors intensively pursued him, viewing him as their potential weak link. This summer, he can sign with any team in the league as a restricted free agent, meaning they can match whatever offer he gets.
The Grizzlies should think about using the sign-and-trade option for a two-way player if Aldama receives a contract offer from another team.
3. John Konchar
Mr. Reliable is always there for the team when they need a player who will do what they need to do for extra time. When Konchar is on the court, he can make the open shot, get the ball back, and not be a problem on defense.
He is valued because of these skills. But the team can use his $6 million contract to match the salary of a better player they want to bring back.
