“We’re backing him” – Blackburn Rovers player sends clear O’Neill message

Andri Gudjohnsen says the arrival of Michael O’Neill has given Blackburn Rovers a renewed sense of belief, insisting the squad are more than capable of preserving their Championship status.

Rovers moved three points clear of the relegation zone following an uplifting victory at Queens Park Rangers, and back-to-back wins would heap further pressure on the teams around them, starting with Friday night’s clash against Preston North End.

Gudjohnsen believes the new management team have quickly stamped their authority on the group, bringing direction and clarity in the fight to stay up.

“It’s been really positive,” he told RoversTV.

“Since he came in with Steven and Phil, there’s been a clear message about what he expects from us for the rest of the season how we’re going to play and how we’re going to survive.

“We understand the position we’re in, but there’s real confidence in the squad. You can sense around the training ground that there’s no panic. We know we’ve got quality, and we believe better results are ahead.

“The new signings have strengthened us and added different options. Matti (Jorgensen) showed what he can bring at QPR and how he fits into the team. Dapo will make a difference as well, I’m sure of it.

“These final 14 matches are massive. We have to focus on consistent performances and take it one game at a time.”

Blackburn are aiming to secure a league double over Preston for the first time since 2022, a result that would mark an ideal home introduction for O’Neill at Ewood Park.

Gudjohnsen is relishing the prospect of another electric Friday night, having described his header at Deepdale as one of the standout moments of his career. After returning to the starting line-up following injury, he is determined to make up for lost time.

“It’s great to be starting again,” he added.

“It was frustrating being sidelined for six weeks and watching from the stands, but I tried to help the team however I could. Injuries are never well-timed, but they’re part of football.

“I can’t wait for Friday. That goal at Deepdale is definitely up there among my favourites. The atmosphere, the passion from the fans, scoring in front of a packed away end it was special.

“I’d love to experience that again. Those are the matches you want to play in the ones that matter and you want to step up and deliver.”
