Update for Grizzlies fans on Ja Morant after Desmond Bane Trade
Many in the national media find themselves wondering what will happen next once a major exchange occurs.
There were whispers amongst league officials that Ja Morant was to be dealt next, following the startling trade of Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in February.
The Grizzlies’ disastrous season came to a close with a sweep loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round, amplifying the clamor.
Despite repeated statements from general manager Zach Kleiman stating that the team is in excellent standing with Morant, this nevertheless happened.
After that, the Grizzlies sent Desmond Bane to the Magic in a deal, which led ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and others to speculate about whether Morant or Jaren Jackson Jr. would be available in a trade.
In an interview with Brian Windhorst, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon and Tim Bontemps made it clear that Morant is only being dealt if he asks to be transferred.
The Grizzlies should listen to Stephen A. Smith and others who think otherwise, though. Following Stephen A. Smith’s most recent analysis of Memphis’s image and the reasons why other high-profile athletes don’t want to play for the team, Ja Morant took to Twitter to discuss his relationship with the city and its reputation.
Ja Morant and Memphis are match made
In the twenty-four seasons following their 2001 relocation from Vancouver to Memphis, the Grizzlies have been largely successful, making the playoffs fourteen times.
In 2019, the franchise’s fortunes were turned around when they drafted Ja Morant, who became the first superstar in the team’s history.
Even though trolls are common among NBA players, posting this on the same day Bane was moved to the Magic seems a bit convenient. Just like Giannis in Milwaukee, Booker hasn’t asked to leave Phoenix, which is why the Suns haven’t made him available.
Everything is subject to change on any particular Sunday, but with all the assets they acquired from the Magic, the Grizzlies could be in an intriguing position to pull off another blockbuster trade.
