Southampton complete last-minute transfer and fans are not happy

Wolverhampton Wanderers are close to finalising the signing of Southampton striker Adam Armstrong, with the deal expected to be completed within the next two hours.

Wolves have submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League, allowing them extra time beyond the 7pm deadline to conclude the move.

Sky Sports report that the club is in the closing stages of securing Armstrong, who finished last season as Southampton’s leading scorer.

Armstrong’s departure is expected to pave the way for Southampton to confirm the arrival of Canadian international Cyle Larin later this evening.

The former Blackburn Rovers forward joined Southampton in 2021 but struggled to make an impact in the Premier League under Ralph Hasenhüttl.

However, he rebuilt his reputation as a reliable Championship striker, enjoying an outstanding 2023/24 campaign in which he scored 21 league goals, followed by three more in the play-offs. His winning goal in the play-off final against Leeds United cemented his status as a cult hero among Saints supporters.

Wolves head coach Rob Edwards appears to have reinvested the funds received from the sale of Jorgen Strand Larsen astutely. Should Wolves find themselves relegated this season, Armstrong would represent proven Championship quality.

Meanwhile, DAZN Canada report that Cyle Larin has completed his medical ahead of a move from RCD Mallorca to Southampton. The 30-year-old has spent the first half of the season on loan at Feyenoord, where he failed to score in eight appearances.

Larin is known for his physical presence, strong aerial ability and link-up play. While not a prolific scorer, he ranks highly for involvement in matches and brings others into the game effectively. Despite interest from clubs across Europe, Major League Soccer and Spain, the Canadian striker is set to cancel his Feyenoord loan and join Southampton in the Championship until the end of the season.

While Southampton may not have replaced Armstrong with a natural goal machine, they have added a forward capable of contributing in a variety of ways.
