Oxford City relegation battles intensify following 2-0 loss to Marine
Oxford City slipped to a 2-0 defeat against Marine at the MGroup Stadium on Saturday, with Charlie Jolley striking in the first half before a late goal from Offrande Zanzala sealed all three points for the visitors, as reported by Mark Edwards.
It was a result City could hardly argue with, and one that deepens their relegation concerns though the margin of defeat might easily have been greater.

Early drama has been a recurring theme in City’s matches this season and it surfaced again inside four minutes. Latrell Humphrey-Ewers brought down Jolley in the box, but Marine’s leading scorer George Newell failed to capitalise, crashing his penalty against the left post.
City attempted to respond. Josh Ashby forced a save from Fraser Barnsley with a free-kick, while Alfie Potter delivered a dangerous cross that unsettled the visitors’ defence. However, warning signs went unheeded. Fin Sinclair-Smith fired narrowly wide before Jolley broke through on the half-hour mark and confidently beat debutant goalkeeper Max Metcalfe to give Marine the lead.
Marine’s high-energy approach denied City time and space, constantly pressing and breaking forward with intent. Metcalfe produced an impressive save to deny Sinclair-Smith and keep the deficit at one, but frustration continued to grow for the hosts.
Callum McFarlane, on loan from Solihull, had City’s best opportunity before the interval but blazed over from 12 yards when he should have tested Barnsley.
Marine were forced into a first-half change when Matty McDonald limped off, yet the disruption did little to alter the pattern after the restart. City struggled to carve out clear openings, prompting a triple substitution just past the hour.
The changes briefly lifted the tempo, with Barnsley formerly of Oxford United tipping a George Burroughs header over and Josh Parker probing for an opening, only to find Marine’s defence resolute.
Any lingering hopes were extinguished seven minutes from time when substitute Zanzala darted between static defenders to double Marine’s advantage.
Marine’s defensive discipline deserved credit, while City must now regroup quickly ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with Telford.
City lineup:
Metcalfe; Burroughs, Wiggett, Harper-Bailey, Humphries (Roddy 58); Ashby; Humphrey-Ewers (Ellis 58), Potter; Bearne (Daniel 64), McFarlane, Parker.
Subs not used: Treml, Wilson, Scott, Kauan.
Attendance: 613
