Middlesbrough bring in ex-Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith on loan
Middlesbrough have finalised the loan signing of goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith from West Bromwich Albion.
The former Sheffield Wednesday academy graduate was once highly regarded during his progression through the Owls’ youth system and went on to earn England caps at youth level.

Wildsmith made 89 senior appearances for his boyhood club but struggled to cement himself as the long-term first choice. He left Wednesday in 2022 and enjoyed a productive two-year spell with Derby County before joining West Brom in the summer of 2024.
After featuring 20 times for the Baggies, including a run in the side last December, the 30-year-old has now been allowed to move to the Riverside on a temporary deal.
In confirming the move, Middlesbrough said Wildsmith will add depth and competition to their goalkeeping department, highlighting his experience across more than 200 career appearances, largely accumulated during his time with Sheffield Wednesday and Derby.
Wildsmith is expected to compete with Sol Brynn for a place between the posts and arrives amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Seny Dieng’s future.
BBC Sport Teesside report that a potential move to Feyenoord has collapsed, though Dieng could still leave before the window closes. The Senegal international was also linked with Hull City earlier in the window, but that move failed to materialise, leaving his situation unresolved as the deadline approaches.
