Key fixtures Southampton FC must win to secure a Championship playoff place
Southampton FC cannot afford many more mistakes if they are to force their way into the Championship playoff places before the season reaches its conclusion.
The Saints came dangerously close to dropping points during Tuesday night’s trip to West Bromwich Albion, in a fixture many would have expected them to win comfortably.
Form suggested the visitors should have been in control. The Baggies had gone 12 league games without a victory heading into the clash at The Hawthorns, while Southampton were riding a ten-game unbeaten run across all competitions.
However, football rarely follows the script. Southampton struggled to break their opponents down and were on course for a frustrating defeat before substitute Cyle Larin stepped up late on to rescue them and prevent a disappointing 1–0 loss.

While the late intervention ensured Southampton avoided defeat, the mood among supporters at full-time was likely mixed. Relief at salvaging a result was accompanied by frustration that valuable ground had been lost in the race for the top six after failing to defeat an opponent struggling for form.
Manager Tonda Eckert knows his side must convert performances into victories as the campaign moves towards its dramatic finale, particularly with Wrexham AFC pushing hard in the battle for a playoff place.
Several upcoming fixtures could prove decisive if Southampton are to keep their promotion ambitions alive.
Coventry vs Southampton
A daunting challenge awaits next as Southampton travel to league leaders Coventry City. If the Saints want to maintain pressure on their rivals for a playoff berth, securing points here could be vital.
The Sky Blues appear well on course for promotion, currently leading the standings with 77 points. Nonetheless, Southampton have shown they can spring surprises away from home, most notably in the FA Cup when they stunned Fulham FC on their own ground. Replicating that fearless mentality at the CBS Arena will be crucial.
Southampton vs Oxford United
At first glance, a meeting with Oxford United might seem straightforward, but such matches often carry hidden dangers.
Oxford remain locked in a relegation battle and will be desperate for points. In the Championship, few games are guaranteed, and Southampton must avoid complacency when Matt Bloomfield’s side visit at the end of March.
Wrexham vs Southampton
April promises to be a defining period for Southampton supporters. The month begins with an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal FC before attention quickly shifts back to the league and a crucial trip to face Wrexham AFC.
The Red Dragons currently represent one of the biggest obstacles to Southampton’s playoff ambitions. Securing a victory at the Racecourse Ground would not only provide valuable points but also deliver a significant psychological boost during the decisive stage of the season.
Southampton vs Derby County
Another high-stakes encounter follows soon after when Derby County visit St Mary’s. The Rams sit level on points with Southampton, highlighting how tight the promotion battle has become.
Coming immediately after the demanding clash with Wrexham, this contest could play a major role in shaping the final playoff picture.
Southampton vs Ipswich Town
The Saints’ penultimate league match sees them face another promotion contender in Ipswich Town.
By this stage of the campaign, Southampton could either be outside the playoff picture or firmly in the hunt. Should they navigate the earlier fixtures successfully, this meeting could serve as a preview of the intensity expected in the playoffs themselves.
