Ipswich hit with fresh double injury blow before Sheffield Wednesday showdown
Kieran McKenna has delivered an update on several Ipswich Town players as his side prepare for their upcoming trip to Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday recently halted a miserable 14-match losing streak, earning their first point of 2026 in a 1–1 draw against Watford. However, it could have been an even more positive outcome for the Owls if not for a dramatic late equaliser from the Hornets.
It was a frustrating case of déjà vu for Wednesday. Just as in December’s meeting between the sides, they took the lead but were eventually pegged back by Vivaldo Semedo. The Portugal Under-21 international struck deep into stoppage time on both occasions — first at Vicarage Road and again in the latest encounter.

Danny Röhl’s side now face another difficult assignment as they host promotion-chasing Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys are pushing for an immediate return to the Premier League following last season’s relegation and have been in impressive form, losing just once in the league since Christmas Day.
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna has confirmed that Marcelino Núñez will not feature in this weekend’s trip to Hillsborough. The midfielder appeared to suffer a hamstring injury early in last weekend’s 1–1 draw with Leicester City but remained on the pitch until the closing stages of the match.
The 26-year-old was absent from the squad for Tuesday’s 3–3 draw with Watford, and McKenna later confirmed the nature of the injury affecting the Chile international.
Speaking about Núñez’s availability, McKenna said: “It’s a hamstring injury that he picked up in the game on Saturday. So it’s no for this one, it’s no for Saturday (at Sheffield Wednesday) and probably no for the one after that (Millwall at home) as well.”
Núñez has enjoyed a productive season since completing a summer move across East Anglia from Norwich City to Ipswich. He has scored three goals and provided 10 assists in league action so far.
Meanwhile, fellow summer recruit Azor Matusiwa is also a doubt for the Suffolk side. The Dutch midfielder is dealing with a hamstring issue as well, although McKenna admitted the club are still assessing the severity of the problem.
Sheffield Wednesday will be meeting Ipswich for the first time since their 3–1 defeat in the reverse fixture in December. Cedric Kipré, Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke scored for the hosts in that game, while Liam Cooper netted his first league goal for the Owls during the second half.
