Claims have it that NBA best player don’t want to play for Memphis because of safety reasons
Memphis is consistently among the most dangerous cities in the United States.
In exchange for Desmond Bane, the Memphis Grizzlies received Cole Anthony, four first-round picks, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and a first-round pick swap from the Orlando Magic. The transaction also included a first-round pick.
After trading away a star player, some believe the Grizz will have to start over.
One piece on Tuesday’s episode of First Take on ESPN asked, “Should the Grizzlies move on from Ja Morant?” During the conversation, Stephen A. Smith, a senior spokesman for ESPN, offered an unconventional explanation for Memphis’ inability to recruit top talent.
“It’s a great sports town, great fans, great people,” Stephen A. said. “But there’s an element there where cats like Jimmy Butler and others don’t feel it’s the safest environment. I’m talking to the local authorities in Memphis. You’ve got to clean some of that stuff up because it’s dissuasive to NBA players. They have talked about it. I know. They’ve told me.”
During his time in Miami, Jimmy Butler was linked to multiple teams, including the Grizzlies.
The top gambling sites even had Memphis as their favorite to sign Jimmy Buckets. As the rumors started to circulate, the Grizzlies withdrew from the race, claiming that Butler was open to offers from anywhere except Memphis.
At the time, it wasn’t a major issue because other players had preferred landing spots.
Maybe it was just Jimmy’s personal preference that he didn’t want to continue his NBA career there. Just before the trade deadline, Butler was traded to the Golden State Warriors, where he signed a two-year contract extension.
