Birmingham City join list of clubs with heavy losses as £34m figure emerges
Birmingham City have become the latest Championship club to post significant financial losses in their most recent accounts, underlining a wider trend across the division.
Collectively, clubs in the Championship have racked up losses exceeding £310 million, with only a handful managing to turn a profit.
The Blues’ latest financial results, covering the period up to June 2025, paint a clear picture of their current position. The club recorded an operating loss of £39 million, despite recently announcing record-breaking revenues on their official channels.

Figures up to June 30, 2025, also show a pre-tax loss of £34.4 million, marking a notable rise compared to the previous year. This comes against the backdrop of Birmingham competing in League One during the 2024/25 campaign following their relegation.
The accounts highlight that wage costs increased by nine per cent to £38.9 million, while revenue also saw a healthy rise from £28.7 million to £35.6 million. However, the financial boost was partially offset by a £6 million drop in broadcasting income as a result of their relegation.
While higher attendances helped balance some of that shortfall, the figures also underline the club’s reliance on ownership group Knighthead for financial support.
The report outlines that Birmingham will require around £59 million in additional funding from Knighthead between July 2025 and December 2026.
Club directors have stated they remain confident that sufficient funding will be available to meet financial obligations over the next year, and as a result, the accounts have been prepared on a going concern basis without any material uncertainties flagged.
