“Big Mistake”: Former EFL Man raises doubts over Chris Davies at Birmingham City

Birmingham City’s push for a Championship play-off place has faded, leaving head coach Chris Davies under increasing scrutiny as the season nears its conclusion.

Despite the growing pressure, former EFL player Adam Virgo has urged the club to remain patient with Davies. The Blues currently sit 14th in the table after 40 matches, trailing the top six by 11 points with only six games remaining.

Their latest setback came in a 1-0 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers on Good Friday, further denting their already slim hopes of breaking into the play-off positions.

Writing in The Football League Paper, Virgo acknowledged that Birmingham are likely to miss out on the play-offs but warned against making a managerial change. He argued that dismissing Davies would be a significant error, pointing to the coach’s strong reputation, last season’s League One title success, and the progress made in stabilising the club in the Championship.

He also highlighted that the current squad was assembled to suit Davies’ tactical approach and should benefit from a full season’s experience at this level.

Birmingham’s leadership now faces a key decision ahead of the summer. Expectations have been high following significant investment in the squad and the club’s ambition to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Although they dominated League One last season—winning the title with a record points tally the step up to the Championship has proven more challenging than anticipated.

Davies made an immediate impact after taking charge in 2024, but recent performances have lacked consistency, raising doubts about his long-term future. With the club’s ambitions in mind, there is speculation that Birmingham could consider appointing a more high-profile manager if results do not improve.

Since his appointment, Davies has overseen 104 matches, recording 60 wins, 22 draws, and 22 defeats figures that reflect both his early success and the recent dip in form.

The defeat to Blackburn has added to frustrations, particularly around Birmingham’s inefficiency in front of goal. Attention now turns to their next fixture on Easter Monday, when they travel to Portman Road to face promotion-chasing Ipswich Town. It represents a difficult test against one of the division’s strongest sides.

Looking ahead, Birmingham will be targeting a stronger campaign next season and are expected to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window. Whether Davies remains at the helm to lead that rebuild is still uncertain.
