Frank Lampard ‘knows all about’ Doug King unrest at Coventry as exit fears grow
Coventry City could face a major challenge to keep hold of Frank Lampard this summer after a fresh development surrounding the club’s future ambitions.
The Sky Blues wrapped up their campaign in emphatic fashion, recording three straight victories against Portsmouth, Wrexham and Watford. The wins over Pompey and the Hornets especially underlined Coventry’s attacking quality, with Lampard’s side scoring nine goals across the two fixtures.
Their 5-1 demolition of Portsmouth also confirmed Coventry as Championship winners, capping off a remarkable season before further triumphs over Wrexham and Watford completed a memorable end to the campaign.

When Lampard arrived at the CBS Arena in November 2024, there were still major doubts surrounding his managerial credentials following difficult spells with both Chelsea and Everton in the Premier League.
Taking over from Mark Robins also brought added pressure. Robins had become a legendary figure at Coventry after leading the club from League Two to the brink of the Premier League, while also guiding them to an FA Cup semi-final.
However, Lampard has now etched his own name into Coventry folklore after ending the club’s 25-year absence from the top flight.
The former England midfielder’s impressive work has inevitably attracted attention elsewhere, and reports from The Sun claim Lampard is aware that owner Doug King may not possess the financial power required to give Coventry the best chance of Premier League survival.
King himself has already hinted that keeping Lampard at the club could prove difficult, while the report also states that Crystal Palace are considering the ex-Everton boss as a possible successor to Oliver Glasner.
Glasner enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Selhurst Park, leading Palace to FA Cup success and potentially a Conference League triumph before his expected departure when his contract expires this summer.
The growing gulf between the Championship and Premier League has become increasingly obvious in recent years, with promoted clubs repeatedly struggling to survive in the top tier.
Although Sunderland have managed to stay up this season and Leeds United are expected to do the same, both clubs invested heavily in their squads after promotion — something Coventry may struggle to match financially.
Should Lampard depart, Coventry’s hopes of avoiding an immediate return to the Championship could become significantly slimmer.
The 47-year-old has already built a strong connection with supporters after delivering promotion and rewriting the club’s recent history. His experience, ambition and growing influence around the club make him a hugely important figure heading into next season.
Losing him now would leave Doug King facing the difficult task of attracting a replacement willing to take on a relegation battle with fewer resources than many Premier League rivals.
Lampard’s strong Chelsea connections could also prove valuable in the transfer market, particularly when it comes to securing promising young loan talent — another advantage Coventry may lose if he decides to move on this summer.
