Steven Gerrard set for surprise comeback as Championship side makes approach
Bristol City are pushing to convince Steven Gerrard to take charge next season as he weighs up a return to management in England.
The former Liverpool FC captain has also been linked with the vacancy at Burnley FC following their relegation, and is believed to be open to a role in the EFL Championship. Gerrard has been without a club since departing Al-Ettifaq in 2025.
Bristol City have reportedly presented an ambitious and appealing long-term plan in a bid to lure the 45-year-old. Should he accept the role at Ashton Gate Stadium—an option he is thought to be consideringhe would replace his former England manager Roy Hodgson, who is currently in interim charge.
Gerrard is understood to be eager to return to the dugout sooner rather than later.
There is also a growing sense that managers from his generation have taken inspiration from the resurgence of Frank Lampard, whose work at Coventry City has restored his reputation after navigating the demands of the EFL.
As a result, more high-profile former players are now willing to follow a similar path, with both Bristol City and Burnley presenting appealing opportunities in their own ways.
Gerrard’s last managerial spell in England came with Aston Villa, which ended in October 2022, having earlier led Rangers FC to a league title.
