Coventry City’s love letter to Mark Robins comes as Stoke confront big decision

Mark Robins’ frustration at Stoke City has come at a moment when a club he devoted years of hard work to has finally completed the journey he began.

He recognises that Stoke supporters are not only dealing with the disappointment of a season that slipped away, but also the weight of several difficult years before his arrival on New Year’s Day 2025.

What started as a promising campaign highlighted by a top-of-the-table clash with Coventry City in November gradually unravelled into a bottom-half finish by May. There is no shortage of questions over how things deteriorated so significantly.

At the same time, Robins has had to watch from a distance as Coventry, a side he rebuilt over nearly eight years amid constant off-field turmoil, pushed on to achieve what he set in motion.

His last promotion with the club came during lockdown, denying supporters any real celebration, and that was followed by near-misses, including a play-off final defeat and a controversial FA Cup semi-final exit.

Club legend Steve Ogrizovic acknowledged the scale of Robins’ contribution, describing his tenure as one of the most challenging and transformative in the club’s history.

He pointed out that Coventry were on the brink when Robins took charge, guiding them from League Two to the Championship despite numerous setbacks, including relocation and ownership changes.

Ogrizovic noted that while Robins may look on and wonder what might have been, Coventry’s current success is built firmly on the foundations he laid during those difficult years.

The mood surrounding Robins now is starkly different from the admiration he enjoys at Coventry. After Stoke’s 3-1 defeat to Portsmouth in their final home game, uncertainty hangs over his future.

According to Rob Gurney, Robins’ position at Stoke is far from secure, even though his legacy at Coventry remains untouchable.

Stoke now appear to be at a decisive point. Football clubs frequently face such moments, where leadership must determine the next direction, and this feels like one of those occasions. Robins himself has indicated he is open to discussions about what comes next.

There is clear respect for him from Stoke owner John Coates, and it was always understood that turning the club around would not happen overnight, particularly after previous managerial changes failed to deliver progress. The challenge at Stoke is very different from the one Robins faced at Coventry. On paper, the club has all the right infrastructure, including top-class facilities, but it also carries the burden of underachievement, having failed to finish higher than 14th in the Championship for eight years.

Despite that, Robins has maintained that success is achievable. He has stressed the importance of smart recruitment, developing talent, and building squad depth principles that underpinned his success at Coventry.

He believes Stoke have the resources and environment needed to improve, but must complement that with better availability of players and stronger squad depth, areas where Coventry have excelled in recent times.
