Reporter hails Birmingham City star as “Man of the Match” after 2-0 key win over Wrexham

Birmingham City strengthened their attacking options in the January transfer window with the addition of Carlos Vicente, who has already begun to make an impact.

The 26-year-old winger was singled out as the standout performer in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Wrexham, with Birmingham live reporter Alex Dicken naming him Man of the Match. Goals from Vicente and Christoph Klarer secured the victory, lifting the Blues to 15th in the Championship with four matches remaining.

Vicente arrived from Alavés in La Liga during the winter window, seeking a fresh challenge in English football. Since his move, he has featured 14 times across all competitions—13 in the league—contributing three goals and one assist.

Dicken praised the Spaniard’s display, highlighting his decisive influence on the game. He noted that Vicente’s headed opener set the tone, while his pace consistently troubled Wrexham’s George Thomason, making him the clear choice for the accolade with a rating of 9/10.

Chris Davies’ side delivered a commanding performance against Phil Parkinson’s team and will aim to carry that momentum into their upcoming away fixture against Hull City.

Brought in to enhance the club’s attacking depth, Vicente adds further competition in forward areas. Birmingham reportedly invested around £7 million to secure his services, handing him a long-term contract running until June 2029.

He competes for a starting spot alongside players such as Demarai Gray, Patrick Roberts, and Jay Stansfield. Like many players adapting to a new country and league, Vicente has taken time to settle, but recent performances suggest he is finding his rhythm.

Prior to his move, the Zaragoza-born winger impressed at Alavés, where he registered 17 goals and 17 assists in 83 appearances, earning attention before Birmingham made their move.

What next for Vicente and Birmingham City?

Birmingham will head into their next match against Hull City with renewed confidence. Their opponents remain in the play-off mix alongside Millwall, Middlesbrough, and Southampton, though they are currently on a three-game winless run.

Vicente appears to be settling into life with the Blues, and his performances are expected to improve further as he continues to adapt. Given the significant investment made to bring him in, the club will be encouraged by the early signs of his quality.

Having secured promotion from League One last season finishing as champions ahead of Wrexham and Charlton Athletic Birmingham are under pressure to remain competitive following heavy spending. The win over Wrexham was a positive step, but consistency will be key in the final stretch of the campaign.
