Michael O’Neill opens up on Blackburn Rovers future with clear decision

Michael O’Neill has confirmed he will return to his role with Irish Football Association after overseeing the final seven matches of the season at Blackburn Rovers.

The head coach, whose contract with Northern Ireland runs until 2028, stated he will “revert to the status quo” once his short-term spell at Ewood Park concludes in May.

Although there had been suggestions he could remain at Blackburn beyond the summer, his latest comments indicate his long-term commitment lies with the national team, regardless of how the club’s season ends.

Reflecting on recent performances, O’Neill acknowledged the disappointment of defeat but pointed to encouraging aspects, noting the limitations of a small squad and the impact of missing players.

He emphasized that there are positives to take when reviewing both individual matches and the broader progress made.

He reiterated that his role at Blackburn is temporary, confirming he will take charge of the remaining fixtures before resuming full-time duties with Northern Ireland. This marks the clearest indication yet of his intentions, having previously avoided committing to a post-summer plan.

O’Neill will remain involved with the national side for their upcoming fixture against Wales national football team before returning to Blackburn preparations ahead of their trip to Birmingham City.

Northern Ireland’s hopes of progressing further in their campaign were ended following defeat to Italy national football team, with second-half goals proving decisive.

Despite the result, O’Neill praised his players’ discipline, effort, and overall performance, particularly in the first half where they limited opportunities and remained competitive.

He highlighted the character, energy, and potential within the squad, suggesting several players are capable of progressing to a higher level.

While acknowledging the disappointment of elimination, O’Neill stressed that reaching this stage and competing as they did provides a strong foundation and plenty of positives for the future.
