Sheffield Wednesday fall behind as QPR storm into race for Scottish Premiership ace
Queens Park Rangers have entered the race to sign a player enjoying an outstanding campaign, placing Sheffield Wednesday at a clear disadvantage in the battle for his signature.
As the Championship season moves toward its closing phase, QPR appear destined for a mid-table finish. Their recent 3-1 away victory over Leicester City pushed them past the 50-point mark, reinforcing that outlook.
Manager Julien Stéphan praised his side’s display, highlighting their resilience, composure, and collective cohesion, particularly after conceding first. He also noted the importance of maintaining focus and game management in the closing stages.

Despite the positive result, defensive frailties remain a concern. QPR have conceded 60 goals this season—among the highest in the division—and inconsistency in goal has been a key issue. Paul Nardi, Joe Walsh, and Ben Hamer have all rotated between the posts, prompting the club to prioritise strengthening the goalkeeper position in the upcoming summer window.
Reports indicate that QPR are now actively pursuing Dundee FC goalkeeper Jon McCracken, a development that significantly complicates matters for Sheffield Wednesday, whose relegation to League One has already been confirmed. Blackburn Rovers are also monitoring the situation, although they remain embroiled in a relegation fight of their own.
McCracken is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, making him an attractive option. Dundee manager Steven Pressley recently praised the 25-year-old for his performances, describing his season as exceptional and emphasising his continued development during his first sustained run at this level.
| Goalkeeper | Club | Saves per 90 |
|---|---|---|
| Jon McCracken | Dundee FC | 3.8 |
| Dimitar Mitov | Aberdeen | 3.3 |
| Jerome Prior | Livingston | 3.2 |
| Shamal George | St. Mirren | 3.2 |
| Jack Butland | Rangers | 3.1 |
Statistically, McCracken has been one of the standout goalkeepers in the Scottish Premiership, recording 114 saves and leading the league in saves per 90 minutes. His profile suggests he could provide a solution to QPR’s goalkeeping issues, particularly given his availability without a transfer fee.
