Frank Lampard raises concerns about Coventry City transfer links with Crystal Palace loanee
Romain Esse arrived at Coventry City on loan from Crystal Palace in January, as Frank Lampard sought to strengthen his options out wide for the remainder of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.
With only two natural wingers available prior to the window, Coventry moved to bring in both Esse and Yang Min-hyeok on loan from Premier League clubs, while also adding midfield reinforcement in the form of Frank Onyeka.
These additions appeared to address key gaps in the squad, with Coventry well-positioned in their push for a long-awaited return to the Premier League after more than two decades. However, the influence of each signing has varied significantly.

The Tottenham loanee has made just four appearances, including one start. Onyeka gradually established himself and is now a key figure in midfield, while Esse made a bright start before his form dipped.
Across 11 appearances, the winger has contributed to two goals, both coming during his six starts. However, he has started only once in Coventry’s last seven Championship matches and has also been an unused substitute twice in that period.
Assessing the situation, a Coventry fan pundit suggested that the move has not delivered as expected and that it may be time for the club to consider alternative options.
Initially viewed as an exciting addition, Esse impressed in his first few outings, showing flashes of quality with goals and assists, along with a level of flair rarely seen at the club in recent years. However, that early promise quickly faded.
Concerns have emerged regarding his decision-making, with a tendency to attempt individual moments of skill at inappropriate times rather than contributing consistently within the team structure. While his technical ability is evident, his overall approach has raised questions.
It was also suggested that he may benefit from stronger guidance to better align his performances with the team’s collective objectives, particularly given Coventry’s promotion ambitions.
Looking ahead, it is expected that Esse could be sent out on loan again next season. A permanent move to Coventry appears unlikely, especially given Crystal Palace’s probable valuation in the £15–20 million range, having invested a significant fee to sign him from Millwall.
Instead, Coventry may look to recruit more experienced wide players capable of competing at Premier League level, should promotion be secured. While players such as Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ephron Mason-Clark remain valuable, they may be better suited to rotational roles at a higher level.
Ultimately, any recruitment decisions will depend heavily on financial considerations, particularly in balancing wages and squad depth. Based on current performances, Esse does not appear to fit Coventry’s long-term plans.
