Here’s why Middlesbrough fans shouldn’t panic over Hayden Hackney blow

Middlesbrough endured a frustrating setback in their push for automatic promotion in the Championship after being held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol City on Saturday.

Having halted a three-match winless spell with consecutive away victories against Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers, Boro appeared to be regaining momentum. However, they were left disappointed once again at the Riverside Stadium.

Leo Castledine’s 65th-minute strike looked set to secure all three points, but Middlesbrough were punished for failing to take further chances, as Adam Randell struck deep into stoppage time to snatch an equaliser for the visitors.

The result means Kim Hellberg’s side have now gone four home games without a win. They sit just two points ahead of third-placed Ipswich Town, who also hold a game in hand, although Millwall’s unexpected home defeat to Blackburn Rovers prevented further damage in the standings.

As if the late equaliser was not damaging enough, Middlesbrough were also left concerned over Hayden Hackney after the midfielder was forced off during the second half. Despite those fears, there remains some cautious optimism regarding his condition.

Hackney, who attracted significant transfer interest in the summer but chose to stay, has been one of the standout performers in the division this season. With six goals and eight assists in 40 appearances, his influence extends far beyond raw statistics, with many viewing him as one of the Championship’s most impactful players.

Concerns grew when the 23-year-old went down shortly after assisting Castledine’s opener. He initially attempted to continue after receiving treatment, but was ultimately unable to do so and had to be substituted.

Speaking after the match, Hellberg admitted uncertainty over the issue, suggesting fatigue could be a factor given Hackney’s consistent involvement throughout the campaign, while expressing hope that the problem is not serious.

While supporters now await further updates, the timing of the injury could offer a small advantage. Middlesbrough have faced a demanding schedule in recent weeks, with frequent televised fixtures and midweek matches limiting recovery time.

With their next fixture not until Saturday, the squad now has a rare full training week, potentially allowing Hackney additional time to recover. Should the issue prove minor, he could still be available for the trip to Blackburn.

Even if he is unavailable for that match, the upcoming international break would provide a further opportunity for recovery ahead of a crucial run of fixtures, including key clashes against Millwall, Ipswich Town and Wrexham.

Given the importance of those matches in the promotion race, Middlesbrough will be eager to have Hackney fully fit.

While any injury concern is unwelcome at this stage of the season, the slightly lighter schedule ahead may at least give him the best possible chance to return in time for the decisive final stretch.
