‘Should be ashamed’ – Ian Holloway slams Aston Villa over Middlesbrough transfer
Ian Holloway has made no secret of his frustration with Aston Villa’s handling of Finley Munroe’s future.
The former Swindon Town boss criticised Villa for what he described as a major mistake in allowing the highly rated left-back to join Middlesbrough, insisting the Premier League club should be embarrassed by their decision.

Munroe completed a January move to Boro after impressing during a productive loan spell under Holloway at Swindon in League Two. With the 20-year-old due to be out of contract in the summer and no new deal offered, Villa opted to recall him early from his loan and sell him for a six-figure fee.
Holloway had already voiced concerns while the transfer was unfolding, likening Munroe’s potential to that of former Blackpool defender Seamus Coleman. Following the completion of the deal and Munroe’s departure from Swindon, his criticism intensified.
Speaking after the move, Holloway lamented the loss of a key player and praised Middlesbrough for spotting Munroe’s ability, while accusing Villa of letting a special talent slip through their fingers. He claimed Munroe was among the best young left-backs he had encountered in his career and described Villa’s decision as a serious misjudgement.
The comments will be welcomed by Middlesbrough supporters, particularly given Holloway’s previous comparisons. Munroe has already made his debut for Boro, appearing briefly from the bench in their recent victory over Preston North End.
With Matt Targett set to remain at the Riverside for the rest of the season, Munroe is expected to continue his development in the short term, learning alongside the experienced Newcastle United loanee. Middlesbrough believe they have secured an outstanding long-term prospect, with the defender contracted to the club until June 2030.
