Sheffield United are edging closer to completing a deal for a defensive reinforcement who shares the same representative as Mark McGuinness.

Wilder relishing Millwall test

As the noise around transfer deadline day begins to ramp up, Chris Wilder must first focus on a demanding on-field challenge, with Millwall visiting Bramall Lane while firmly in the play-off picture.

Previewing the fixture, the Blades boss was full of respect for the opposition. He described Millwall as a hard-working and honest group, praising their manager’s experience and track record from his early days at Hamilton through to Premier League football with Norwich.

Wilder highlighted Millwall’s willingness to compete, run hard, play with purpose and grind out results, pointing to their current league position as proof of that approach. He admitted it would be a “great challenge” and one he is genuinely looking forward to.

The United manager also spoke warmly about trips to The Den, calling it a proper football ground with a fierce atmosphere. He believes the experience will be particularly valuable for younger players in the squad, including Femi, Blaster, Sydie and Brooksy.

With Millwall’s home ground renowned as one of the most intimidating venues in the Championship, Wilder knows his side will be tested. A positive result could provide the ideal platform ahead of a crucial few days both on and off the pitch.

Blades move ahead in McGlinchey race

Away from the action, Sheffield United are pushing towards an agreement for Chelsea left-back Harry McGlinchey. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, the Blades now lead the race for the defender’s signature, moving ahead of interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City.

Both rivals have been keen on McGlinchey, but United appear to have gained the upper hand. While Wolves’ Premier League status and Birmingham’s play-off ambitions might usually offer strong competition, Sheffield United may have a key advantage.

Centre-back Mark McGuinness is represented by the same agency as McGlinchey, a link that is understood to have helped negotiations progress as deadline day approaches.
