Finalist status for Golden Spikes awarded to Razorback for second consecutive season
A new name has been added to the shortlist for the highest college award: the shortstop.
Shortstop from Arkansas Three players, including Wehiwa Aloy, were declared finalists for the Golden Spikes Award.
All-American shortstop Alex Lodise of Florida State and All-American left-handed pitcher Liam Doyle of Tennessee are the other two remaining candidates.
The award was created by USA Baseball in 1978 and is widely seen as the most important in college baseball. It is similar to the Heisman Trophy in football. Aloy has 20 home runs and is hitting.355,.440,.686.
He is only the seventh player in school history to make that mark. This year, he has also started all 59 games at shortstop and hit second in every single one of them. On the other side of the ball, Aloy’s defense has gotten better.
He has made only five mistakes in 205 tries, giving him a.976 fielding percentage. Aloy is still in the running for this season’s awards.
He was previously named a candidate for the Brooks Wallace Award (best shortstop) and a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Award.
Doyle is likewise riding high on the strikeout front, leading college baseball with a 15.34 K/9. Coming off a game-winning performance in the regional final against Wake Forest, he will get the nod to start one of the first two games in the series against the Razorbacks. Lodise had a slugging percentage of.738 and an on-base percentage of.467, putting him in the top fifteen nationally in batting average (.404).
He is also one of the most likely candidates for the award. In addition to his perfect 6-for-6 record in attempts at stolen bases, he has 38 extra-base hits, including 17 home runs, 18 doubles, and 3 triples.
As the Seminoles travel to take on the No. 8 Oregon State Beavers in the Super Regional, all three of these players will be in action. Smith, RHP Phil Stidham (1991), OF Andrew Benintendi (2015), and RHP Kevin Kopps (2021) are the other four players in school history to garner finalist honors; Aloy joined them.
The honorees were Benintendi and Kopps. Fans have till June 20 to cast their ballots at GoldenSpikesAward.com. Before the first pitch of Game 1 of the College World Series finals on June 21 at 6:30 p.m., ESPN will announce the winner of the Golden Spikes at 5:30 p.m.
The College World Series qualifying game between the Razorbacks and the Volunteers will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday and can be watched on ESPN.
