Washington Commanders Sign Former Cowboys WR Michael Gallup to One-Year Deal
In a move to bolster their receiving corps, the Washington Commanders have signed former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup to a one-year contract. The veteran pass-catcher, who previously spent six seasons with the Cowboys, will now look to revitalize his career in Washington.
Gallup’s Journey with the Cowboys
Michael Gallup was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Colorado State. Over six seasons, he became a reliable target in the Cowboys’ offense, amassing 266 receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns. His best season came in 2019 when he recorded 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns, establishing himself as a dynamic deep threat alongside Amari Cooper.
However, Gallup’s career trajectory changed after he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee at the end of the 2021 season. While he signed a five-year, $57.5 million contract extension with Dallas in 2022, he struggled to regain his pre-injury form. Over the past two seasons, his production declined, leading the Cowboys to release him in March 2024.
A Brief Retirement and Comeback
Following his release from the Cowboys, Gallup signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders in April 2024. However, in a surprising turn of events, he retired just before training camp, citing mental and physical exhaustion. His decision caught many off guard, as he was expected to compete for a starting role with the Raiders.
Now, less than a year later, Gallup has decided to return to the NFL, expressing a renewed passion for the game. The Commanders, looking to add veteran experience to their receiving corps, quickly seized the opportunity to bring him on board.
Why the Commanders Signed Gallup
Washington’s passing game has undergone significant changes in the offseason, particularly with the addition of former 49ers star Deebo Samuel. Gallup will now join a receiving group led by Samuel and Terry McLaurin, giving the Commanders a trio of proven playmakers.
One of the key factors in Gallup’s decision to join Washington was his relationship with head coach Dan Quinn, who previously served as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. Quinn’s familiarity with Gallup and his leadership style played a major role in convincing the receiver to sign with the team.
“Coach Quinn has always been one of the guys who checks up on me, even when I wasn’t playing,” Gallup said in a recent interview. “I’m excited to get to work and prove I’ve got plenty left in the tank.”
Contract Details and Expectations
Gallup’s contract with the Commanders is a low-risk, one-year deal worth up to $1.335 million. The move gives Washington an affordable option with upside, as Gallup still has the ability to contribute if he can regain his previous form.
For Gallup, this season represents an opportunity to prove himself once again. If he performs well, he could earn a larger contract next offseason. If not, it could mark the final chapter of his NFL career.
Either way, the Commanders are betting on a talented veteran who is eager to prove that he
still belongs in the league.
