The Grizzlies’ potential trade partners for Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. have been revealed in a new NBA report.
During Sunday’s deal, the Memphis Grizzlies sent Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, four first-round picks (one protected and one unprotected), and one first-round pick swap.
Shams Charania of ESPN reports that in the trade, Orlando traded Memphis the following: the No. 16 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, the first round pick for 2026 (which includes the rights to trade with the Washington Wizards or the Phoenix Suns), and the unprotected first round picks for 2028 and 2030.
By 2029, the pick swap will have top-two protection.
In a statement, Magic president Jeff Weltman expressed his excitement about Desmond’s arrival to the team.
“Over his five years in the NBA, Desmond has distinguished himself as one of the elite guards in our league, and we look forward to his shooting, IQ and wide-ranging skill set in helping our team take a step forward.” Many observers and fans were wondering whether the Grizzlies will deal Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant to the Magic after trading Bane to them.
In the first round of the playoffs this year, the Oklahoma City Thunder swept Memphis. Since drafting Jackson Jr. and Morant, the Grizzlies have won just one playoff series. Having traded Bane to Orlando, Memphis is reportedly not interested in trading Morant or Jackson Jr., according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.
“According to ESPN’s sources, the Grizzlies are not in the market to trade either of their two starting forwards,” Bontemps reported.
This offseason, the organization extended and renegotiated Jackson’s deal, keeping him from entering free agency in 2026.
They spent months clearing salary cap space to make that happen. According to reports, there is a belief that an extension will be completed.
The Bane trade, however, opens the door for Memphis to offer Jackson more in that transaction and secure his long-term commitment.
This season, Morant appeared in fifty games. Off the floor, he shot 45.4%, had a 30.9% 3-point percentage, and an 82.4% free-throw percentage, good for 23.2 points, 4.1 boards, and 7.3 assists a game.
Through 74 games played, Jackson Jr. shot 48.8% from the field, 37.5% from 3-point range, and 78.1% from the foul line, while averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 blocks.
