Supercomputer makes Championship top-six prediction with surprise Southampton and Wrexham twists

Published

on

Southampton climbed into the Championship play-off places with a narrow 1-0 win over Norwich City on Wednesday, overtaking Wrexham in the process.

Despite being level on points, Wrexham’s 3-1 defeat to Watford a day earlier proved costly, allowing Tonda Eckert’s side to take advantage. With eight games remaining, Southampton will aim to hold onto sixth, while Wrexham continue to apply pressure just behind them.

Hull City, meanwhile, are in danger of dropping out of the top six after losing three of their last five matches, highlighting a concerning dip in form at a crucial stage.

Following these developments, Opta’s supercomputer has projected how the Championship top six is likely to finish.

Southampton – 6th

Southampton are predicted to secure the final play-off spot after their recent victory pushed them ahead of Wrexham. The model suggests they have enough to maintain their position, although any slip-ups in the closing weeks could prove decisive. Their resurgence under Tonda Eckert has been notable, particularly after a difficult start to the season under former manager Will Still.

Hull City – 5th

Despite their recent struggles, Hull City are still expected to finish fifth. Their earlier form has given them a strong enough foundation, and the supercomputer backs Sergej Jakirovic’s side to remain inside the play-off places and compete for promotion.

Millwall – 4th

Millwall are forecast to take fourth place. While they remain within reach of the automatic promotion spots, recent setbacks such as defeat to Blackburn Rovers have dented their momentum. Nonetheless, a fourth-place finish would still represent a strong campaign.

Ipswich Town – 3rd

Ipswich Town are projected to finish third. Although they have the potential to challenge for second, the model indicates they will fall just short and instead enter the play-offs. With a game in hand over some rivals, they remain a dangerous contender.

Middlesbrough – 2nd

Middlesbrough are tipped to hold onto second place and secure automatic promotion. Their recent form has been inconsistent, but Opta’s projection suggests they will do enough to stay ahead of Ipswich and Millwall in the final standings.

Coventry City – 1st

Coventry City are backed to win the Championship title. After a brief dip in form at the start of 2026, they have rediscovered consistency, going on an impressive winning run. Their sustained performances throughout the season make them strong favourites to finish top.
