‎Ruben Selles sacked again as his 2025/26 season worsens after Sheffield United nightmare

Ruben Selles was handed the Real Zaragoza job in the aftermath of his troubled spell at Sheffield United, but his return to management has brought little improvement.

Sheffield United dismissed the Spaniard after only six matches in charge, and he has now been relieved of his duties once again, this time by the LaLiga 2 outfit.

The Blades have spent much of the 2025/26 season attempting to repair the damage caused by a chaotic summer. After missing out on promotion last term, Chris Wilder was removed from his position and a major squad overhaul followed.

Selles was appointed as his successor, yet six straight defeats at the start of the campaign quickly sealed his fate. Wilder was subsequently reinstated, several of the previous changes were reversed, and Sheffield United have since kept faint hopes of reaching the play-offs alive.

Selles did not remain out of work for long, soon taking charge at Real Zaragoza. However, his time in Spain has proven equally difficult. According to local outlet El Periodico Aragon, he has now been dismissed again, marking his second sacking of the season despite only signing a deal until the end of the campaign.

His appointment at Bramall Lane had raised eyebrows, representing a significant step up after steady work with Reading in League One and Hull City in the Championship. Yet his tenure with the Blades unravelled almost immediately, yielding no points and just two goals from six games.

There was optimism when he returned to his homeland, with Zaragoza battling near the bottom of the table and hoping his previous success in relegation fights could inspire a turnaround.

That revival never materialised. The club sit bottom of LaLiga 2 and are without a win in seven matches. Across 20 games in charge, Selles managed just five victories, four of which came during his opening seven fixtures.

Overall, his 2025/26 managerial record stands at 26 games, five wins, six draws and 15 defeats — an average of 0.81 points per game. It has been a season to forget, though his earlier achievements suggest he may yet rebuild his reputation elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United have stabilised under Wilder’s return. The Blades currently sit 13th following a weekend win over QPR, nine points adrift of the play-off places. With Wrexham occupying sixth, Wilder maintains that a strong run could still keep their promotion hopes alive.
