Real story exposed inside West Brom’s dressing room on how the squad felt about Eric Ramsay departure
West Bromwich Albion are searching for their third permanent manager of the 2025/26 Championship season after dismissing Eric Ramsay on Tuesday night, as they battle to avoid relegation to League One.
Ramsay’s spell at The Hawthorns lasted just 44 days. The former Manchester United coach endured a torrid time after arriving from Minnesota United FC to replace Ryan Mason only last month.
While Mason had already struggled to convince during his own stint in charge, Ramsay’s appointment quickly turned into a full-blown disaster. The 34-year-old failed to register a single victory across his nine matches before being dismissed following a frustrating 1-1 home draw with Charlton Athletic, who sat 18th at the time.

That result left Albion 21st in the table, just one point above Leicester City, who occupy the final relegation place after being hit with a six-point deduction.
With only 12 games remaining, the threat of dropping into the third tier for just the third time in the club’s history is becoming increasingly real — and Ramsay will inevitably shoulder a share of the blame if that outcome materialises.
How the squad viewed Ramsay during his short spell
In the wake of his departure, fresh details have emerged regarding how the dressing room responded to Ramsay’s methods.
According to a report by Tom Collomosse in the Daily Mail — which also outlined the club’s curious managerial recruitment process — players were often left perplexed by the Welshman’s tactical approach. Ramsay had initially been considered before the club opted for Mason, only to circle back to him in January amid mounting relegation concerns.
One particular decision that raised eyebrows was deploying Mikey Johnston as a wing-back. The Republic of Ireland international has been one of Albion’s few standout performers this season, registering nine assists, making the positional switch all the more baffling to those inside the camp.
Supporters openly questioned Ramsay’s sweeping tactical alterations, many of which appeared abrupt and ineffective, and it seems the players shared similar reservations. While the squad did not down tools, reports suggest they felt too much was being changed too quickly and were often unclear about their individual roles and responsibilities.
The Johnston experiment in particular reportedly “left many puzzled,” highlighting the limited authority and trust Ramsay managed to establish during his brief tenure with the struggling Championship side.
West Brom issues is beyond Eric Ramsay dugout
Although Ramsay’s exit was widely seen as inevitable, many fans believe the club’s problems extend far beyond the head coach.
There has been little evidence of a coherent long-term strategy, both in terms of managerial appointments and player recruitment. At the same time, the squad must accept responsibility for repeated underperformance under multiple managers.
Since the departure of Carlos Corberan, no coach has succeeded in consistently extracting strong performances from the group, with questions frequently raised about the team’s fight, resilience and commitment.
Letting Ramsay go was an understandable decision — though appointing him in the first place, given the club’s precarious situation, now looks ill-judged. Albion must now identify a leader capable of delivering immediate improvement and restoring belief before undertaking a broader reset in the summer.
