Ex-West Bromwich Albion star arrested as Spanish police uncover large-scale drug operation
Footballers often follow very different paths once their playing days come to an end, with many choosing to pursue new opportunities away from the pitch after retirement.
A significant number remain within the sport, moving naturally into coaching roles, media positions, or punditry. Others step away from the spotlight entirely, opting for quieter lifestyles or alternative careers that allow them to live more privately.
In some cases, former professionals take on unexpected roles. One notable example is Martin Grainger, who represented clubs such as Birmingham City, Brentford, and Coventry City, and has since transitioned into working as a train driver.

However, it is far less common—particularly among those who played at a high level—for former players to become involved in criminal activity after retiring, given the financial security many achieve during their careers.
In a surprising development, reports have emerged that a former West Bromwich Albion player has been arrested in Spain following a major drugs operation, raising the prospect of a custodial sentence.
According to Spanish sources, the individual—reportedly a 47-year-old British man who spent the majority of his career at The Hawthorns—was detained on the Costa del Sol. The arrest is said to have taken place after police allegedly found him in possession of cannabis upon leaving a shopping centre in Riviera del Sol on March 10.
Further investigations reportedly led officers to uncover additional quantities of drugs within the premises. Authorities later confirmed that a suspect had been stopped due to suspicious behaviour and claimed to have purchased cannabis at the location.
Subsequent searches resulted in the seizure of approximately 1.1 kilograms of cannabis, 865 grams of hashish, along with thousands of euros in cash and other related items. The premises involved were also reported to be operating without the necessary licensing.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether the former West Bromwich Albion player has appeared before a judge or been released on bail, as investigations continue.
