Detroit Lions 28-year-old $14 million starter predicted to cut ties with Detroit for rival team

The sole remaining contest in the 2024 NFL season is the Super Bowl, and the commencement of free agency is imminent, occurring in just over a month. The Detroit Lions are a team that will warrant close observation during the upcoming offseason.
The team experienced a devastating defeat in the divisional round of the playoffs at the hands of the Washington Commanders, despite harbouring aspirations of competing in the Super Bowl. Subsequently, the team experienced the departure of both coordinators, who accepted head coaching positions; Ben Johnson transitioned to the Chicago Bears, while Aaron Glenn took a role with the New York Jets.
Achieving repeated success in the NFL is far from assured. The Lions face considerable challenges in their pursuit of a return to the postseason and a Super Bowl victory in 2025, which necessitates the preservation of the team’s core roster. A significant contributor from the 2024 season who may not return is cornerback Carlton Davis.
Prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, Davis was traded by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Detroit Lions, accompanied by two sixth-round draft picks, in exchange for a third-round selection.
Davis subsequently enjoyed a commendable season, amassing a total of 56 tackles and securing two interceptions. He also recorded the highest passer rating permitted (77.0) and the second-highest completion rate permitted (55.3) of his career.
Nonetheless, Davis is approaching free agency, and the Lions will face formidable competition for his services. Nik Shallon of TWSN is of the opinion that the 28-year-old player will ultimately return to his previous team, the Buccaneers. In reference to a potential reconciliation between Davis and the Buccaneers, Shallon provided the subsequent analysis:
“Following a commendable season with the Lions, Davis is once again a free agent, and it would be prudent to consider a reunion in Tampa Bay,” Shallon articulated. The Buccaneers experienced a commendable season; however, they ultimately succumbed to the Commanders in the Wild Card round. Davis is poised for a seamless reintegration into Tampa, as he possesses an intimate familiarity with the defensive scheme, akin to muscle memory. Given that Todd Bowles remains in his position as head coach, there exists the potential for reciprocal interest in Carlton Davis’s return.
“Despite his season being curtailed due to a jaw injury sustained in week 15, he had a commendable year, achieving a coverage grade of 73.4 on PFF and an impressive grade of 84.4 for throws made within a distance of less than 3 yards,” Shallon remarked. “Carlton would provide seasoned leadership and serve as one of the defensive captains. Given that the Buccaneers possess slightly over $20 million in salary cap space, this reunion could be financially feasible.”
Davis competed for six seasons with the Buccaneers, during which he accumulated a total of 324 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and nine interceptions. As previously indicated, the cornerback possesses a familiarity with the system in Tampa Bay and may find the prospect of returning to be of interest.
Nevertheless, the Lions possess a greater projected salary limit space than the Buccaneers, which may enable the team to offer a more competitive bid for Davis’s services. According to Over the Cap, the Detroit Lions are anticipated to possess approximately $46 million in salary cap space, whereas the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to have around $2 million in cap space.
The Lions’ consideration of re-signing Davis will be contingent upon their level of confidence in Ennis Rakestraw Jr., their second-round selection in the 2024 draft, to assume a starting role. Should Detroit determine that he is not adequately prepared, they may opt to reinstate Davis.
