Coventry City line up “incredible” managerial target amid Frank Lampard Chelsea links

Coventry City are lining up a potential managerial move, with Derby County boss John Eustace emerging as their leading target amid growing uncertainty over Frank Lampard’s future.

Lampard, who has already had two spells in charge of Chelsea, is once again being linked with a return to Stamford Bridge. Former midfielder Gus Poyet believes the opportunity could prove too tempting to turn down if it arises, pointing to Lampard’s strong connection with the club and his continued development as a coach.

While his stint at Everton may not have gone to plan, Poyet suggested those experiences only add to his growth, insisting a reunion with Chelsea remains a realistic prospect at some stage.

Interest in the 47-year-old is not limited to Chelsea, with Crystal Palace also reportedly monitoring the situation. Chairman Steve Parish is said to be an admirer of Lampard, who has guided Coventry to the verge of a Premier League return this season.

With Chelsea reportedly making an approach and pressure mounting on Liam Rosenior following a difficult spell in charge after replacing Enzo Maresca, Coventry are preparing for the possibility of losing their manager. As a result, Eustace has been identified as a prime candidate to step in, and the Derby boss is believed to be open to the move.

Despite Derby falling short in the race for automatic promotion, they remain firmly in the play-off picture, sitting just three points outside the top six.

Eustace has impressed since taking charge at Pride Park just over a year ago, orchestrating a significant improvement in form while favouring a 4-2-3-1 system. His impact has drawn praise, with observers highlighting the scale of the turnaround he has overseen.

Games 58
Wins 25
Draws 12
Losses 21
Points per Game 1.50

Meanwhile, Coventry are closing in on a return to the Premier League. Sitting 12 points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough with just five matches remaining, promotion is now within touching distance.

Lampard’s side require only four more points to confirm their place in the top flight, although they could secure it sooner with a win over Sheffield Wednesday if results elsewhere go in their favour. If not, taking four points from their upcoming fixtures against Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers would be enough to seal the deal.
