Coventry City edge toward promotion as Boro fall short again
Coventry City are on the verge of sealing a return to the Premier League, with their vastly superior goal difference leaving promotion all but mathematically certain.
Their position was strengthened further after Middlesbrough suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Portsmouth, a result that effectively cleared the Sky Blues’ path.
Earlier in the day, Coventry were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by already relegated Sheffield Wednesday at the CBS Arena, while Millwall had also dropped points in a draw with West Brom the night before.

Those results leave Millwall third on 73 points and Middlesbrough fourth on 72, with both sides now unable to match Coventry’s tally. Even if they win all remaining fixtures, their maximum possible totals fall short of catching Coventry, who have already reached 85 points.
Crucially, Coventry’s goal difference stands at +42, putting them well clear of their closest rivals and effectively securing a top-two finish. That advantage means promotion is now a formality rather than a question of if.
Just a single point from their upcoming trip to Blackburn Rovers would make it official, with thousands of supporters set to travel to Ewood Park in anticipation of the moment.
Manager Frank Lampard remains unconcerned about where or how promotion is confirmed, insisting the manner of sealing it is irrelevant compared to the achievement itself.
Drawing on his own past experiences, he suggested that sometimes the most memorable celebrations come away from home, reinforcing his focus solely on getting the job done.
